UFC on FX 8: Belfort vs. Rockhold results: Winners and losers

Bloody Elbow - Sun, 05/19/2013 - 09:00

Last night's UFC on FX 8 card was kind of odd. The event delivered a lot more action than most expected, but none of the fights outside of the main event offered much relevance. That makes posts like this a little harder than you'd think, because I'm basically stuck with listing the actual winners and actual losers and providing a little context. I'll switch it up a bit (sorry Sapo), but don't blame me if this post is a little paint-by-numbers. I'm just working with what I'm provided. Now that we have the "you're probably going to be disappointed" warning out of the way, let's get on with it (assuming anyone is actually still reading).

Winners

Vitor Belfort - It's hard to imagine how the night could have gone any better for The Phenom. He didn't just beat Rockhold early, he did it in spectacular fashion. The last time I remember a main event ending in such brutal fashion, Belfort was on the other end of a crazy kick. But Vitor has now cemented his claim on a future middleweight title shot, and proven that he's still an elite fighter after 17 years in the cage. I'm not putting a TRT asterisk next to this like some will - that was simply one of the most beautiful finishes I've ever seen. I hope it's remembered as such, without all the extra baggage.

Ronaldo Souza - Jacare was expected to walk through Camozzi, and he did just that. But he made a great first impression to UFC fans nonetheless. Souza has it all - ridiculous grappling skills, solid striking and wrestling, and a lot of charisma to boot. I'm an unabashed fan of Jacare and have been for a long time, and I think it's great that he's finally going to get the respect he deserves. Next up is likely a big-name opponent, and I can't wait.

Nik Lentz - Even if he got worked in the final round, the win over Dias might be the most important of his career to date. He just derailed a top prospect and moved to 3-0 at 145. It's pretty hard to deny him a top-ten fighter now. Even if his style isn't exactly crowd-pleasing, he's proving that he's a handful for anyone at featherweight.

Francisco Trinaldo - Submitting someone with an arm triangle from half guard? How can you not be impressed with that? Many fans are still sleeping on Massaranduba and that's a shame. He's 3-1 in the UFC with three finishes, and his single loss was to the only guy at lightweight that's bigger than him, Gleison Tibau. I hope Trinaldo gets a step up in competition next. He has earned it.

Lucas Martins - Was his win over Jeremy Larsen full of technical brilliance? Nope. But you have to respect a guy that comes out in the final round when he knows he's down on the cards and is determined to get that finish. And it only took 13 seconds. Yes, Larsen walked into that punch. But it was still pretty devastating. He certainly captured my attention with that fight, and I look forward to seeing him fight again. As a fighter that's stuck on Facebook, that's about the best thing you can ask for.

Losers

Luke Rockhold - I respect the hell of out Rockhold for a few reasons. One was his chin - how that kick didn't knock him out right away is beyond me. Another was his choice to stick around for a post-fight interview, and giving Belfort his props. But there's no denying that the loss was a huge setback for the ex-Strikeforce champ. He'll have to prove he belongs in the top 10 in the UFC, and there are a lot of tough fights out there for him. I personally believe that he can hang with the best, but he just missed out on his chance to cut the line. It's going to take a while to get back there.

Evan Dunham - I was surprised at how many people had Dunham beating Dos Anjos so soundly. I thought it was really close and didn't have a problem with either guy winning. Either way, that L is huge. Dunham is now 3-4 in his last seven after starting his UFC career with four straight wins. Dana White believes he was robbed and the UFC isn't going to hold this against him, but it's pretty clear that he's not going to be gracing the UFC's rankings page anytime soon. That's not a good thing.

Rafael Natal - Yes, he won. But he looked pretty horrible in doing it. Zeferino gassed hard after the first round and he was basically a sitting duck. And what did Sapo do? A whole lot of nothing. He showed zero aggression until it was way too late. He's a talented, well-rounded fighter, but his lack of awareness in the cage is just unbelievable sometimes. That's the last time you'll see him on a main card for a while, and he has no one to blame but himself.

Hacran Dias - He came out fired up in the third and almost finished the fight. But where was that kind of fire in the first two rounds? He let Lentz control the tempo and turn it into his kind of fight. I know that Lentz does that a lot, but Dias most definitely has the skills to not let that happen. His striking was measured and tepid, and he let Lentz close the distance way too easily. Color me disappointed.

UFC on FX 8 referees - Events in Brazil always leave me steamed at the referees. Even non-Brazilian referees seem to stand up fights too quickly or bow to crowd reaction. The Jussier Formiga - Chris Cariaso fight was technically brilliant on the ground. Formiga would pass. Cariaso would somehow regain guard. They went back and forth and even though they weren't striking, they were ridiculously busy. So what happens? They get stood up. Back to the ground, same type of action, and another standup. Come on. Let fighters fight. Mario Yamasaki might have been the worst offender of all though. He took a point from Azamat Gashimov for one cage grab. Okay, fine. But when Hacran Dias did it about six times, Yamasaki just issued warnings. No point deduction. The inconsistency is so frustrating.

UFC on FX 8 results: Vitor Belfort and Jacare Souza among $50,000 bonus recipients

Bloody Elbow - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 23:50

UFC on FX 8 was filled with great finishes, back-and-forth action, and it culminated in a memorable spinning kick KO victory for Vitor Belfort against Luke Rockhold in the main event. To no one's surprise, he also wins "Knockout of the Night". Here's a full rundown of the evening's $50,000 bonus recipients:

  • Fight of the Night - Lucas Martins def. Jeremy Larsen via KO (punches), round 3.
  • Knockout of the Night - Vitor Belfort def. Luke Rockhold via spinning kick and punches, round 1.
  • Submission of the Night - Ronaldo Souza def. Chris Camozzi via arm-triangle choke, round 1.

Here are some facts on all three awards:

  • Vitor Belfort returned to the UFC in 2009, and has won 4 of his fights by KO. All of his KO victories have also earned KOTN honors. It's also the first time any UFC fighter has scored consecutive head kick KO wins.
  • Chris Camozzi has been submitted twice in the UFC (the other came vs. Kyle Noke), and both times he's been on the wrong end of a SOTN bonus.
  • This is the 3rd time in the past month that the FOTN has ended in a 3rd round finish. Miesha Tate/Cat Zingano and Pat Healy/Jim Miller also ended in the 3rd.

Mosley vs Cano results: Shane Mosley ends streak, wins unanimous decision

Badlefthook.com - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 23:50

The four-year winless streak of 41-year-old Shane Mosley has ended, as the former lightweight, welterweight, and junior middleweight champion downed 23-year-old Pablo Cesar Cano via unanimous decision tonight in Cancun, Mexico. Mosley won the 12-round welterweight fight on scores of 115-113 across the board. BLH also had it 115-113 for Mosley.

Mosley (47-8-1, 39 KO) had his struggles in the fight, and certainly didn't look like he was "back," which is what you're going to hear coming out of this fight. But he was better at this level, certainly, than he has been against the likes of Mayweather, Pacquiao, and Canelo, where he was outclassed by younger, stronger, better fighters, and also matched up better than he did against Sergio Mora, his last non-loss (a 2010 draw), because Cano was there to hit and be hit.

It was a solid fight and decent win for Sugar Shane, who was reunited with his father Jack as lead trainer for the first time since Mosley's troublesome win over Ricardo Mayorga in September 2008. And though Cano (26-3-1, 20 KO) is no top contender, really, and is hardly a special fighter, he's also no bum. Mosley stood in there with him, hurt his foe with some good shots, and stood up to some solid blows in return. Both guys were staggered a bit at various points of the fight, and both fought on. Mosley, in the end, was legitimately the better man on the night, even if just barely.

So what can we expect next? Cynically, a world title shot could be within Mosley's reach. He still has a little name value, certainly more than a lot of the would-be opponents out there, and Golden Boy has the WBA (Malignaggi) and IBF (Alexander) titles in their stable. If Adrien Broner beats Malignaggi in June, and decides to stay at 147, would anyone really be shocked to see Broner face Mosley?

Or if Amir Khan indeed goes up to 147, would anyone be shocked to see Mosley as his first full weight test?

So no, Mosley is not returned to his younger form. He never will be. But he got the win tonight and will fight another day. He gave a genuinely spirited effort and fought hard for all 12 rounds. He was as good as Cano, and that means he's as good as a lot of guys at 147. Compared to his prime, Mosley is shot. But a shot Mosley is still better than a competent, second-tier welterweight. And there are a lot of those guys out there.

UFC On FX 8 results: Fighters react on Twitter

Bloody Elbow - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 23:41

UFC On FX 8 ended in fireworks with Vitor Belfort landing a spinning back kick perfectly on Luke Rockhold's chin. That strike led to Belfort finishing the fight with ground strikes and capping off a 4-fight win streak in the Middleweight division. On top of that, Ronaldo Souza made an emphatic UFC debut by completely outclassing Chris Camozzi on the ground to grab a first round submission win.

As you'd expect many names in the UFC and MMA world were watching the event and had their own responses to the action. Check out what some of your favorite fighters had to say about the show on Twitter:

Congrats to Rafael "Sucko" Natal, if he woulda known the counter to 50/50 guard was being a man then maybe he would of finished him.

UFC on FX 8: Belfort vs. Rockhold results and post-fight analysis

Bloody Elbow - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 23:24

UFC on FX 8 didn't have a ton of interest going in, and most of it was related to three little letters - TRT. Well, you can say what you want about Vitor Belfort's supposed fountain of youth, but his spinning kick knockout of Luke Rockhold in the main event was one of the best big-fight finishes you're ever going to see. I'm still having problems understanding how in the world that happened. I can't say that I've ever seen Belfort throw a spinning kick before, and when he threw the first one I chuckled a bit.

I wasn't chuckling after the second one.

When that connected and Rockhold fell, I just stared at the TV open-jawed, like a kid watching animals fight at the zoo. The fact that Rockhold was still conscious after the kick was amazing in itself. But it didn't take long for Belfort to pound him out and take his place as the top contender for the UFC middleweight title once again. Seriously, how can you deny him a second shot at the title after that? Combine it with the Bisping knockout and he definitely has the best claim to it. I think the next time you see Vitor Belfort, he'll be standing across the cage from Anderson Silva or Chris Weidman. And I'm 100% okay with that after what I saw tonight.

The winner of the co-main event, Ronaldo Souza, turned in an awesome performance as well. His submission finish of Chris Camozzi was just beautiful. I love a lot of things about MMA, but I rarely find a single athlete worth the price of purchase. I don't order pay per views to watch the best in the world (Jon Jones, Anderson Silva) fight lower-level competition just because they're in the cage. But guys like Jacare and Demian Maia are different. I would pay to watch them fight sheep. They're just so technically amazing that it's a treat to see them compete. And what Jacare did to Camozzi tonight was a perfect example.

Jacare asked to fight the winner of the Belfort/Rockhold fight, and I certainly like the idea of Jacare/Belfort. But I think Vitor will have bigger fish to fry and Jacare needs a legit top 10 win in the UFC first.

Rafael dos Anjos vs. Evan Dunham didn't turn out to be the insanely awesome fight that I hoped it would, but it was still very, very good. I'm sort of surprised that everyone is up in arms about the decision though. I saw a very close, competitive fight that I barely gave to Dunham. I had no issues at all with RDA winning, but apparently everyone else does. I don't think it was hometown cooking, being that the event was in Brazil. I just think that Dos Anjos definitely has a case for the first and third rounds. It wasn't a robbery, it was just two evenly matched lightweights going to the wire. They're lightweights. It happens. Look no further than the last few lightweight title fights for proof.

  • Rafael Natal got the win, but he just didn't show any killer instinct at all. Half the time he looked like he was sparring. Joao Zeferino put in a good performance early, but he totally gassed and was ripe for the taking. Natal took way too long to try and end it, and he ran out of time. I just was not a fan of his performance at all.
  • 50/50 guard in MMA? Cool. The reaction to it was amusing though. Grappling aficionados obviously loved it. But more than a few thought it was ridiculous, the loudest of which was TUF winner Michael Chiesa. His twitter feed was full of insults for the guys ending up there, and he threw in a bunch more going after Sapo. They were amusing, but I doubt they're going to make him many friends.
  • Hacran Dias almost finished Nik Lentz in the third round, but Lentz held on for the win in a good fight. Francisco Trinaldo finishing an arm triangle choke from half guard was pretty crazy, and Gleison Tibau's guillotine is just a scary thing.
  • Paulo Thiago pulled out the win, but he looked shot. I hate saying that about fighters, but it seemed pretty obvious that he's on the downside of his career. His real job is probably pretty draining, so it's not surprising.
  • I believe that Yuri Alcantara will get a bantamweight title shot one day. He's that good.
  • Fabio Maldonado was pretty funny in his win over Roger Hollett. That spinning back kick he took to the frank and berries was brutally awkward, but him complaining about the clinching and begging Hollett to actually fight him was amusing. He's not an elite fighter, but he sure is entertaining.
  • John Lineker is a bad man.
  • The fight of the night might have been one that very few people saw. Lucas Martins and Jeremy Larsen beat the crap out of each other for 10 minutes, with Larsen having the advantage. It was sloppy at times, but a lot of fun. Then Martins came out and blasted Larsen just 13 seconds into the third. Great finish to a great fight.

Middleweights Vitor Belfort and Luke Rockhold stepped into the Octagon as the UFC On FX 8 main event.

Rockhold showed a lot of caution trying to come in early. He went for a takedown from way outside that was stuffed easily by Belfort. Belfort trying to land hard with his infamous handspeed but Rockhold able to circle out of the power shots. Belfort goes for a spinning back kick that lands perfectly on Rockholds chin. Luke dropped to the mat and Beklfort followed him to the ground with vicious ground strikes to get the fight stopped.

Vitor Belfort got the TKO win over Luke Rockhold at 2:32 of round 1

Peterson vs Matthysse results: Lucas Matthysse steamrolls Peterson in three

Badlefthook.com - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 22:49

Lucas Matthysse's hype train is the real deal. The Argentinean slugger thrashed Lamont Peterson in just three rounds tonight, likely setting up a fight with Danny Garcia for September.

Peterson (31-2-1, 16 KO) had a solid first round, boxing from the outside, but he didn't look entirely comfortable in that role. In the second round, Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO) threw caution to the wind a bit more, and Peterson fell into the trenches, where he proved outgunned.

Matthysse put Peterson down on a left hook high on the head, with Peterson responding in a delayed manner, falling to the mat, after a little stumble, with referee Steve Smoger making the correct call. In the third, Peterson was down twice more on bomb shots -- it was Matthysse's left hook that did the big damage tonight, and Peterson just couldn't stand up to the power.

Lamont made no excuses after the fight, either, other than briefly saying he felt he'd been hit behind the head at one point, which dizzied him.

"I recovered from the first knockdown, and I was OK for a while, then eventually he hit me again and hurt me again -- I still thought I could have fought through it, but the ref did the right thing and stopped the fight," Peterson said to Showtime's Jim Gray.

When Gray asked if Matthysse was the better man, Peterson replied, "Tonight, I guess he was."

Matthysse, who was called by Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer "the new Manny Pacquiao" after the fight, was simply sensational in this one. Beating a guy like Peterson is a feat in itself. Tearing him up in three rounds is something else entirely.

Right now, Lucas Matthysse is a true force. Can Danny Garcia handle him? Hopefully, we'll find out.

UFC On FX 8 results: Jacare Souza taps Chris Camozzi with an arm triangle

Bloody Elbow - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 22:25

In the UFC On FX 8 co-main event, Middleweight Ronaldo Souza made his UFC debut against Chris Camozzi. Camozzi ended up on his back early in the fight against one of the best grapplers in the division and he paid for it. It took less than one round for Souza to wrap him up and get the tap from an arm triangle choke.

It didn't take long for Jacare to clinch up against Camozzi. A big right hand from Souza put Chris on the dfensize and ended with him being taken down. Jacare easily passed to half-guard and eventually to side mount. Camozzi tried to scramble but still ended up defending a Jacare arm triangle. That's what happens when you compete with the best on the mat.

Jacare Souza submitted Chris Camozzi at 3:37 of round 1 with an arm triangle choke.

UFC On FX 8 results: Rafael Dos Anjos battles Evan Dunham to win unanimous decision

Bloody Elbow - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 22:07

The Lightweights took the stage second for the UFC On FX 8 undercard with Rafael Dos Anjos facing off against Evan Dunham.

The Lightweights strike from range early with Dos Anjos getting of first in the exchanges. Despite his reach advantage, Dunham looked to strike from the inside. He got Dos Anjos on his back and rode out the remainder of the round in top position without dealing out much damage.

The second round stayed pretty even throughout the first half. Dos Anjos still landed the better shots on the feet but Dunham held his own. Dos Anjos taking the lead by striking first and seeing some success with the clinch against the cage. Dunham got a late takedown and ended the round in top position.

They exchange hooks on the feet before Dunham changed levels for a takedown. Dos Anjos was able to defend and shrug off the attempt. Dos Anhos landed a couple solid kicks to the body. He looked much crisper on the feet than Evan. In the final minute, both fighters went all out winging hooks with whatever they had left to finsih the fight.

Rafael Dos Anjos wins a Unanimous Decision (29-28 x 3) over Evan Dunham

Dos Anjos stepped into the Octagon on a three-fight win streak and a UFC record of 7-4. With a 7-3 UFC record Dunham came into the fight off a split decision win over fellow FX 8 fighter Gleison Tibau.
