UFC suspends Nate Diaz 'pending investigation' over controversial tweet
Bloody Elbow - Thu, 05/16/2013 - 21:24
UFC lightweight Nate Diaz is now suspended merely hours after calling Bryan Caraway a "f*g" for accepting his SOTN bonus, which belonged to Pat Healy until Pat popped for pot (say that 5 times fast ... on weed).
MMA Fighting has an official statement from the UFC:
"We are very disappointed by Nate Diaz’s comments, which are in no way reflective of our organization. Nate is currently suspended pending internal investigation and we will provide further comment once the matter has been decided,"
Dana White also told Dave Meltzer that Diaz's future will be decided on Friday. White did say that Diaz could be released from the UFC in response to his actions today, but for the time being Nate is just suspended. Bloody Elbow will provide updates on this story as they come.

Nate Diaz suspended for Bryan Caraway 'biggest f*g in the world' on Twitter
Bloody Elbow - Thu, 05/16/2013 - 21:07
Coverage of UFC lightweight Nate Diaz's suspension after his controversial tweet on Thursday, May 16th, calling Bryan Caraway a "f*g" for accepting a submission of the night bonus previously awarded to Pat Healy.
Nate Diaz went to twitter to express his frustrations over fellow UFC lightweight Pat Healy losing his UFC 159 FOTN and SOTN bonuses after testing positive for marijuana. Bryan Caraway, who fought Johnny Bedford earlier in the night, received the SOTN money instead. Diaz voiced his opinion in typical Diaz brother fashion:
I feel bad for pat Healy that they took a innocent mans money and I think the guy who took the money is the biggest Fag in the world ..
— Nathan Diaz (@NateDiaz209) May 16, 2013— Nathan Diaz (@NateDiaz209) May 16, 2013
Diaz originally said "the opponent who took it is the biggest fag I've ever heard of" before deleting the tweet. He then amended and reposted the tweet you see in the article, effectively clarifying that it is indeed Caraway who is the "biggest fag in the world". At a guess, he's not referring to Caraway as a British term for cigarette.

UFC president Dana White says Nate Diaz faces fine and suspension or outright release for 'f*g' tweet
Bloody Elbow - Thu, 05/16/2013 - 19:08
A few hours ago UFC lightweight Nate Diaz called Bryan Caraway "the biggest fag in the world" for accepting a UFC 159 SOTN bonus, which previously was Pat Healy's until he tested positive for marijuana. Dana White told MMA Junkie's John Morgan that Diaz will be punished in some form:
Just received this from Dana White on Nate Diaz tweet: "He will be either fined and suspended or cut for that tweet."
— John Morgan (@MMAjunkieJohn) May 16, 2013Matt Mitrione was recently "fined and suspended" for his controversial remarks about Fallon Fox, but obviously that suspension is over and he's free to fight this July against Brendan Schaub.
I would think that Diaz will get the Mitrione treatment, although the two fight losing streak does not exactly improve his status. We'll keep you up to date on Diaz's future with the UFC and whether he'll get the pink slip or stick around and take a suspension and fine.

UFC on FX 8 Belfort vs. Rockhold: Fuel TV Preliminary Card Prognostications Part 2
Bloody Elbow - Thu, 05/16/2013 - 17:04
The UFC returns after a lengthy hiatus with UFC on FX: Belofrt vs. Rockhold in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil. You can read Bloody Elbow's previews of the Facebook card here and Part one of the Fuel card here.
Hacran Dias (21-2-1) vs. Nik Lentz (23-5-2-NC) Featherweight
They grow up fast, don't they? Who knew that Nik Lentz would not only get this far, but would get this far with a reputation for being somewhat exciting? True, his last fight against Diego Nunes didn't light the world on fire, but he did well with the limited tools he's always had to work with against a seasoned, talented fighter who was also a stylistic nightmare for him.
I suspect some of it has had to do with matchups. In fact, if I may be so bold, Lentz might be like Clay Guida: his wins are workmanlike, but his losses are spectacular bloody failures. In Dias, he's facing a Nova Uniao product, which rarely bodes well for the factory sealed American wrestler.
Dias hasn't lost since 2009 on the back of a stifling top control game. He's another Brazilian grappler with an emphasis on position over submission. Unlike his fellow Nova Uniao products, his standup isn't as developed. Which I suspect will play a factor in this fight.
It's a tough one to judge, like many of the other bouts on this card. Lentz could conceivably be able to defend the takedown, which leaves the striking, where I'd say he's superior. Dias is like a lot of guys who understand the mechanics, but not the method. He knows how to throw a punch, but not necessarily when. Lentz is sort of the opposite. He'll fight with urgency when he needs to, and I suspect he'll grind out a pretty tough decision over a talented opponent in this one.
Prediction: Nik Lentz by Decision.
Francisco Trinaldo (12-2) vs. Mike Rio (9-1) Lightweight
Two products of the Ultimate Fighter, both guys flew under the radar during seasons nobody watched. Trinaldo's background is as a kickboxer. Watching him fight, he exhibits fluid movement, but overextends way too much when he swings. His boxing looks a lot like Renan Barao before he polished it up some more and became champ (interim).
The problem with that style of striking is that you can leave yourself open for takedowns, which is the background Rio brings with him into the cage. A two time Florida high school state wrestling champion, Rio has the usual tools that accompany any wrestle-boxer: strong base, and ridumentary but sturdy boxing.
I believe this should be enough to earn Rio the win here. Trinaldo will have difficulty stopping the takedown because he'll find himself out of position too often.
Prediction: Mike Rio by Decision.
Gleison Tibau (26-9) vs. John Cholish (8-2) Lightweight
Tibau continues to be the oversized engine that could. Somehow, despite all odds, he's able to consistently make weight despite a build that would suit him all the way up to Middleweight. And somehow, he wins some, and he loses some.
After all these years I couldn't tell you what Tibau actually brings to the table. Sure, he's got size, but watch his fight with Caol Uno, and then watch his fight with Kurt Pellegrino and tell me who's who when it comes to Tibau's identity as a fighter. His striking is fairly strong. He's quick for a guy his size, and he lands with force. His jiu jitsu is good, having only even been submitted by Joe Stevenson.
At the other end of the spectrum is our commodities broker by day, fighter by night wrestle-boxer John Cholish. He lost his last bout to Danny Castillo, but his style is similar. His boxing is raw, but he punches straight, and with good power.
This is one of those fights that could very close, and despite that, there's little to cover in terms of commentary. Both fighters wrestle when their striking is threatened, and strike when their wrestling is threatened. Expect a seesaw battle in this one, but I like Tibau's chances well...he's Gleison Tibau. What else is he gonna do? Get cut and not fight in the UFC?
Prediction: Gleison Tibau by Decision.

Richard Schaefer: There's no weight issue for Mayweather vs Canelo
Badlefthook.com - Thu, 05/16/2013 - 17:02
Richard Schaefer has taken his standard aggressive stance about the latest "rumors" that make a fight he might be associated with sound like it's not going to happen or isn't that great or whatever, this time getting all up in arms about the Floyd Mayweather camp reportedly not wanting to fight Canelo Alvarez at 154 pounds, insisting instead that the Mexican superstar come down to 147, which few believe he could do while remaining in great shape.
"Whoever is talking, discussing or stating that there is a weight issue does not know what they are talking about. This is all bullshit. Let the professionals do their job and the amateurs should stay out of it. It is amazing how people make up all these stories just to see their name in the news. This is how you kill fights and not how you make them."
Still, this is no longer just coming from Canelo's camp. Floyd Mayweather Sr says the fight has to happen at 147, too. You're OK if you keep your skepticism and don't just believe what the promoter says.
Bottom line is, we'll see. I hope Schaefer can get it done. I truly do. It's my No. 1 fight possible fight in all of boxing right now. If there's an issue, let's hope he's the man to deal with it and get the fight signed. If there's not an issue, let's hope he's the man to deal with it and get the fight signed. Because Schaefer is obviously the point man here.

Alexander vs Purdy: Lee Purdy unimpressed by Devon Alexander
Badlefthook.com - Thu, 05/16/2013 - 16:51
Short-notice opponent Lee Purdy has the biggest opportunity of his career on Saturday night, as the British domestic contender has been drafted in to challenge Devon Alexander for the IBF welterweight title.
Alexander (24-1, 13 KO) is obviously the heavy favorite, but Purdy (20-3-1, 13 KO) is speaking confidently about the matchup, and says there's nothing about Alexander's style that impresses him.
"I've watched a lot of his fights since we got the fight and he's not looked great recently," said Purdy. "He's been holding a lot in recent fights which is why I mentioned that. His style doesn't impress me which is why I don't watch him. I think I can land big shots on him and make him fight my fight, and if I connect cleanly on him there's only one place he's going to go and that's to the canvas. He says he wants to fight the biggest names in the game, no-one here has heard of me so he has to look good against me and he's not going to if he's just going to hold.
"I want him to have a clean fight. I don't want to just hold, get through and nick fights on points, I'm here to entertain and please the fans because that's what they pay their money to see."
"I fought in March and was back in the gym ticking over so I am absolutely ready for this. My punching power is underestimated, I'm tough and durable and I'm out here to win, I'm not here to make the numbers up. If he underestimates me it's a big mistake and it will be all over for him. Tune in, it's going to be a great fight and an explosive performance."
The 25-year-old Purdy has won four straight since dropping a decision to Colin Lynes in 2011, which cost him the British welterweight strap. But there's hardly any comparing Adnan Amar, Chris Johnson, Gumersindo Carrasco, and Cosme Rivera to Alexander, who may not be a tip-top elite fighter, but is a two-weight world titlist, a serious player at 147, and the guy who's been in with the much stiffer competition.
It's an uphill battle for Purdy, but he sounds as if he's coming to shock the world and take home the IBF belt.

Floyd Mayweather Sr confirms: Mayweather vs Canelo must be at 147
Badlefthook.com - Thu, 05/16/2013 - 16:38
Floyd Mayweather Sr, the father and trainer of pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, confirms that Team Mayweather will only fight Canelo Alvarez at 147 pounds, rather than going up to Alvarez's 154-pound weight class.
From Chris Robinson:
"Don't get me wrong, Floyd can beat him (at 154). From what I've seen with Trout, there is no chance of Alvarez whooping Floyd. But the only thing I'm going to say about the weight, the weight can make a difference. It's the only thing that can make a difference. ... We are not concerned about his weight. We are not concerned about how they train, what they do and how he makes the weight. We don't give a damn about them. All we want them to do is come in like we tell them, if they want to get paid."
Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO) calls the shots with his career, and even someone as popular as Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO) simply isn't going to dictate anything to him. If the 36-year-old Floyd doesn't want to go to 154, and Alvarez won't or can't go back down to 147, then this fight isn't going to happen. It doesn't sound as if there's any catchweight that could satisfy both sides, either.
So now that we've established that this basically isn't going to happen just yet (eventually, it's probably going to, one way or another), that's pretty much that. If Canelo wants to boil down, it's a risk for him to take. Floyd is not taking the risk of going up
