Kathy Duva: Sergey Kovalev would be thrilled to fight Bernard Hopkins
Badlefthook.com - Mon, 06/17/2013 - 21:32
Main Events promoter Kathy Duva says she'll examine the possibilities for Sergey Kovalev's next fight, but she will be looking into making a fight against IBF light heavyweight titlist Bernard Hopkins. The IBF ordered the fight earlier today.
From a Main Events press release:
"When the IBF issued today's letter, ordering Hopkins to fight Kovalev next, without granting any exceptions to Hopkins in the interim, everything changed," promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events, said. "Kovalev has many opportunities, now. We are going to take a few days to evaluate and then decide upon the next move. Of course, Sergey would be thrilled to face Hopkins if Bernard wants the fight."
Kovalev is surely ready, willing and able to fight Hopkins. "I want to fight Bernard Hopkins because he is a legend of boxing," Kovalev said after knocking out White. "It was good news that Hopkins and Karo Murat fell out. C'mon and fight. I'm ready. Are you ready?"
Kovalev (21-0-1, 19 KO) obviously wants the fight, but I think it's worth noting that Duva doesn't exactly express a huge, no-doubt interest in making this fight. Of course, maybe she's just as caught off-guard as others might have been -- two days after beating Cornelius White, and just after Karo Murat couldn't make it to the States, here her fighter was put into a mandatory position to face the most famous light heavyweight in the sport. This is the big fish of the division right now. The guy that beats and likely retires Bernard Hopkins will have a spot in history, even if he proves to be a fluke. It's like Don Larsen or Rashard Lewis' contract.

UFC veteran Mike Swick making the move back to middleweight
Bloody Elbow - Mon, 06/17/2013 - 21:00
In 2008 Mike Swick dropped to welterweight, he was having trouble keeping his weight up, and despite a largely successful middleweight campaign (going 5-1) in the UFC he felt that his future was best served at a lighter weight class. Unfortunately, and unbeknownst to him, he was struggling with a medical condition, an esophageal spasm, that was at the source of his weight problems.
A once promising career was trending toward diminishing returns with back to back losses to Dan Hardy and Paulo Thiago and the burden of being unable to maintain a proper diet was wearing on his body. Eventually this would culminate in a 1 1/2 year absence from the sport. That time off allowed him to deal with his medical issues thoroughly, and he returned to UFC on Fox: Shogun vs. Vera an apparently rejuvenated fighter.
However, the renaissance was short lived, and following a disappointing knockout loss to Matt Brown in December Swick has decided to return to the division that gave him his initial fighting success. He made the official announcement via twitter last week.
I wanna come back at a big and healthy 185. No more sickly 170 for me! ;) @ChrisWhite209 Making that UFC return?
— Mike Quick Swick (@officialswick) June 14, 2013
It's hard to say what the end result of this will be, whether it's the right move or just a last attempt to recapture something totally lost. Swick's not especially old at 33, and while he's taken a few licks lately his career hasn't been marked by a wealth of punishment. However, much of his early success was built around his impressive hand-speed and fast twitch muscle ability. If age and illness have diminished those skills, no amount of changing weight will bring them back.
No opponent has been announced for his return to 185 and no debut date has been set, but we'll be sure to keep you posted as information becomes available.

UFC fighter rankings: Shakeups at heavyweight, light heavyweight
Bloody Elbow - Mon, 06/17/2013 - 20:30
Finally, some action! UFC 161 wasn't the most relevant event ever, especially after injuries decimated the card. But an upset in the heavyweight co-main event and a close light heavyweight main event led to some changes in those two divisions in the official UFC rankings. As for everything else? Other than one minor variance at lightweight - nothing.
You can check out the full rankings here, and use the dropdown menu to see the individual picks of the five BE contributors (myself, T.P. Grant, Chris Hall, Fraser Coffeen, and Steph Daniels).
We'll start at heavyweight. Stipe Miocic's upset of Roy Nelson completely re-arranged the bottom half of the division. It also made ranking some of them a headache. For example, Nelson and Mark Hunt have beaten Stefan Struve. But Struve beat Miocic. And now Miocic has beaten Nelson. There's also the recent addition of Josh Barnett to take into account. So how did this affect things?
Well, Nelson fell from five to seven. Alistair Overeem and Frank Mir each benefited from that, moving up one spot to five and six respectively. Miocic entered the rankings at eight. Travis Browne slipped one spot to nine. And Barnett enters the rankings at number 10. Formerly ranked Mark Hunt and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira are now out of the rankings.
At light heavyweight, Dan Henderson's loss cost him dearly in the rankings. He plummeted from three to six. Glover Teixeira moved up the ladder from four to three, while Evans moved up two spots from six to four - above the guy that beat him a few months ago, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
The only other minor change saw Josh Thomson regain his number four spot at lightweight, bumping Gray Maynard back to five. They have flip-flopped the spots after three successive cards now.
So folks, what do you make of the tough-to-rank heavyweight division right now?
