UFC On FX 8 results: Jacare Souza taps Chris Camozzi with an arm triangle
Bloody Elbow - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 22:25
In the UFC On FX 8 co-main event, Middleweight Ronaldo Souza made his UFC debut against Chris Camozzi. Camozzi ended up on his back early in the fight against one of the best grapplers in the division and he paid for it. It took less than one round for Souza to wrap him up and get the tap from an arm triangle choke.
It didn't take long for Jacare to clinch up against Camozzi. A big right hand from Souza put Chris on the dfensize and ended with him being taken down. Jacare easily passed to half-guard and eventually to side mount. Camozzi tried to scramble but still ended up defending a Jacare arm triangle. That's what happens when you compete with the best on the mat.
Jacare Souza submitted Chris Camozzi at 3:37 of round 1 with an arm triangle choke.

UFC On FX 8 results: Rafael Dos Anjos battles Evan Dunham to win unanimous decision
Bloody Elbow - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 22:07
The Lightweights took the stage second for the UFC On FX 8 undercard with Rafael Dos Anjos facing off against Evan Dunham.
The Lightweights strike from range early with Dos Anjos getting of first in the exchanges. Despite his reach advantage, Dunham looked to strike from the inside. He got Dos Anjos on his back and rode out the remainder of the round in top position without dealing out much damage.
The second round stayed pretty even throughout the first half. Dos Anjos still landed the better shots on the feet but Dunham held his own. Dos Anjos taking the lead by striking first and seeing some success with the clinch against the cage. Dunham got a late takedown and ended the round in top position.
They exchange hooks on the feet before Dunham changed levels for a takedown. Dos Anjos was able to defend and shrug off the attempt. Dos Anhos landed a couple solid kicks to the body. He looked much crisper on the feet than Evan. In the final minute, both fighters went all out winging hooks with whatever they had left to finsih the fight.
Rafael Dos Anjos wins a Unanimous Decision (29-28 x 3) over Evan Dunham
Dos Anjos stepped into the Octagon on a three-fight win streak and a UFC record of 7-4. With a 7-3 UFC record Dunham came into the fight off a split decision win over fellow FX 8 fighter Gleison Tibau.

Alexander vs Purdy results: Devon wins easily, hurts left hand
Badlefthook.com - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 22:06
Devon Alexander had no trouble tonight with Lee Purdy, but did hurt his left hand en route to a seventh round stoppage, when Purdy's corner stopped the one-sided bout.
Alexander (25-1, 14 KO) said he hurt the hand in the opening round, but he didn't show sure signs of the injury until the sixth, when he clearly had stopped throwing it at all. That continued on into the seventh, but after that round, Purdy's team, including middleweight contender Darren Barker, made the call to end the fight. Purdy (20-4-1, 13 KO) was showing no signs of making it competitive, and all he was doing was getting hit. The fight was never close.
For Alexander, it's as decent a win as can be scored over an opponent of this level, and it's hardly as if we can say he avoided a tougher fight (or ever has), because this was supposed to be Kell Brook, but when that fight was called off for a third time, it became simple and plain that Devon needed to get back into the ring. That's what this fight was: A stay-busy bout. The worst thing would have been a shock upset. That never threatened to happen. The second-worst thing, really, was suffering an injury. That did happen, but Alexander wasn't exactly exhibiting horrible pain or anything, so it likely won't majorly interfere with where he goes next.
The main event from AC is up next, so join our live coverage thread for Peterson vs Matthysse.

UFC On FX 8 results: Rafael Natal decisions Joao Zeferino
Bloody Elbow - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 21:33
The main card of UFC On FX 8 got started with a Middleweight bout between Rafael Natal and Joao Zeferino. It was far from the best fight on the card, but Natal used his experience advantage to secure the UD over UFC newcomer Zeferino.
Zeferino got the action started landing a big overhand right from range. They clinched up and Natal looked for a takedown only to be reversed by Zeferino. They scrambled and it was Joao who grabbed a leg to threaten the submission. Natal stayed calm and and defended will in the 50-50 guard. Neither fight really gained an advantage here. Referee Leon Roberts separated the fighters very late in the round.
Zeferino really lunging into his punches head first early in round two. They landed, but Sapo looked unfazed. They spent most of the rest of the round striking from distance with neither man langing any big shots. Natal scored a late takedown and finished the round in top position.
Bro-hug started the final round. Slow start to the round, but Natal scored a takedown halfway through the fight. Sapo worked for an arm triangle that allowed him to pass to side control and then mount. Zeferino managed to survive to the final bell, but just barely.
Rafael Natal scored the Unanimous Decision (29-28 x 2, 30-27) over Joao Zeferino
Natal came into the fight off a 3rd round submission win in his last appearance and a 3-2-1 UFC record. Zeferino was making his UFC debut and took the fight on only 2 weeks' notice.

Peterson vs Matthysse results: Shawn Porter dominates Phil Lo Greco
Badlefthook.com - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 21:17
Shawn Porter disappointed last December when he faced Julio Diaz on Showtime Extreme, going to a draw with the veteran former lightweight titlist, but tonight, he got some of his momentum back, dominating fellow unbeaten prospect Phil Lo Greco, scoring a wide decision win.
The official judges' scores were 99-89, 100-88, and 100-88. BLH had it 100-88 for Porter, who improves to 21-0-1 (14 KO) with what was arguably the best win of his pro career. Lo Greco falls to 25-1 (14 KO), outclassed against a better level of opposition than he'd faced in running up his record.
Porter was clearly too fast and too skilled for Lo Greco early, but the Toronto native Lo Greco did keep coming forward, and didn't shy away from contact. Unfortunately for Lo Greco, he couldn't get his punches off, and wound up throwing significantly less than Porter, who dominated the fight statistically as well as to the naked eye.
Lo Greco was ruled knocked down in the ninth round, but that was a debatable call at best. In the 10th, though, Porter scored a cleaner knockdown, which to Lo Greco's credit, came because the obviously trailing fighter was going for some kind of miracle, throwing himself at Porter as much as he could.

UFC On FX 8 results: Tibau and Trinaldo get submissions, Lentz grabs UD
Bloody Elbow - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 20:54
The preliminary card for UFC On FX 8 continued with three more fights on Fuel TV. Gleison Tibau got his fourth submission victory in 19 fights with a guillotine choke that stopped Cholish. In the next fight, Trinaldo outclassed Rio pulling off an arm triangle submission from halg-guard in round 1. In the feature bout, Lentz outworked Dias in the first two rounds to win a decision victory.
The Carney tried to turn this into a Lentz' fight early with a clinch against the cage. Dias was able to get his back off the chainlink, but still gave way every time Nik came forward swinging. Once again Lentz gets him against the cage halfway through the round. Dias defended the takedown and went for a trip of his own. He got him down only to be reversed. Dias scrambled and took clinch control.
Lentz took control in round two. After getting Dias down early he secured top position and started grinding away. His ground strikes are far from the most devastating and he doesn't have great submissions, but he has solid control and used that to wear down Dias before Hacran regained his feet. Lentz scored another takedown ending up in half-guard.
Between rounds, referee Mario Yamasaki warned Dias that he'd take a point if he grabbed fence again. Knowing he was behind on the cards, Dias came out in the third round swinging. He had Lentz hurt, but the Carney was able to clinch up and recover. Dias scooped Lentz up for the takedown and ended up defending a guillotine. Dias grabbed a arm triangle choke while in guard, but Lentz was able to survive. With aminute left in the fight, Lentz escaped to his feet. Dias threw some aggressive punches, but found himself defending against the fence.
Nik Lentz took the Unanimous Decision (29-28 x 2, 28-27) over Hacran Dias
Francisco Trinaldo vs. Mike Rio
Rio scored an early takedown on Trinaldo that led to him working the front headlock position. Not a lot of damage from either fighter early in the fight. Trinaldo grabbed the body lock to pick up and slam Rio. He advanced to half-guard and caught Mike in an arm-triangle choke to get the tap.
Francisco Trinaldo submitted Mike Rio at 3:08 of round 1 with an arm triangle.
Gleison Tibau vs. John Cholish
Cholish tried to keep on the outside of Tibau's reach early, but the big Lightweight caught him with a takedown. Cholish did a somersault to escape from a caught kick by Gleison. Cholish dumped down from a Tibau double-leg, but Gleison couldn't do any damage before Cholish returned to his feet.
The size difference in this match is incredible. Cholish looked like a Bantamweight next to Tibau and it showed with Gleison's disrespect of his striking and ability to take him down. Gleison landed a big left hand that staggered Cholish. After a failed takedown attempt from John, Tibau jumped guard to lock on a guillotine and get the tap.
Gleison Tibau submitted John Cholish at 2:34 of round 2 with a guillotine choke.

Peterson vs Matthysse results: Thomas Williams Jr cruises past Otis Griffin
Badlefthook.com - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 20:22
25-year-old light heavyweight prospect Thomas Williams Jr stayed unbeaten tonight, easily beating veteran Otis Griffin over the eight-round distance. Scores were 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73. BLH had it 79-73, giving Griffin the first round, and then nothing else.
Williams (14-0, 10 KO) was decent in the bout, but didn't overly impress, though some of that can be credited to Griffin (24-13-2, 10 KO) and his experience and ability to stay out of danger and go deep into just about any fight. The 35-year-old Griffin has lost three straight, but also went the distance with fringe contenders Cornelius White and Will Rosinsky in his previous two losses.
Williams is still a work in progress, and will get plenty more opportunities to keep rising up the ladder, but there is certainly a lot he still needs to work on, and he's no blue chipper. Of course, blue chippers often flame out, and a lot of lesser-regarded prospects have made a lot of noise over the years.

Peterson vs Matthysse results: Anthony Ogogo sweeps cards in second pro fight
Badlefthook.com - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 19:39
2012 Olympic bronze medalist Anthony Ogogo improved to 2-0 as a professional tonight, scoring a decisive and academic six-round shutout victory over Puerto Rican club fighter Edgar Perez in Atlantic City, on the Peterson vs Matthysse undercard.
Ogogo (2-0, 1 KO) turned pro on April 27 in Sheffield, on the Khan-Diaz show, scoring a second round TKO that night. His second pro fight wasn't quite so inspiring, but there was nothing unimpressive about the victory, either. Ogogo, 24, was in firm control from the opening bell, and never seemed to simply settle into a holding pattern, knowing as he must have after the first three minutes that the fight was no challenge for him.
Instead, we got to see him mix up his offense a little bit, taking various approaches to his attack. It may have been more a sparring contest than a fight -- most second pro bouts for hyped prospects are, of course -- but Ogogo was in there working, and not just reveling in his own superiority, which is good to see.

UFC On FX 8 results: Maldonado, Alcantara, and Thiago take home wins
Bloody Elbow - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 19:30
The Fuel TV prelims started off the televised broadcast of UFC On FX 8. The show took off with Maldonado grabbing his second UFC win by brutalizing Hollett throughout the final two rounds of their fight. The Bantamweights followed that up with Alcantara making short work of Santos. Thiago and Santos went back and forth for 15 minutes for the 3rd fight of the show.
Paulo Thiago vs. Michel Prazeres
Prazeres wasn't afraid to bring the fight to Thiago in his debut as a UFC Welterweight. He locked Paulo up in the clinch early in the first relentlessly pursuing the takedown. Referee Mario Yamasaki broke up the action and the two exchanged shots from range. In the closing seconds, Prazeres took control against the cage again.
Thiago got on top of Prazeres early in round two, but Michel escaped when Paulo looked to take back mount. Prazeres secured a couple takedowns, but Thiago reversed to get on top in the final minute. He advanced to half-guard, but couldn't finish in the limited time remaining.
The action slowed early in the third as both fighters looked to strike from range. Thiago's striking looked crisper except for a big uppercut that landed from Michel. Back against the cage, Thiago defended another takedown attempt from Prazeres. They separate and both men are looking tired as the round winds down. Thiago hit a late takedown and advanced to side control while landing strikes in the closing seconds.
Paulo Thiago picked up the Unanimous Decision (29-28 x 3) over Michel Prazeres
Yuri Alcantara vs. Iliarde Santos
Alcantara brought his violent striking game in early in the fight. Santos saw some short success pinning Yuri up against the cage, but it didn't last long. Alcantara landed a straight left to the chin and followed him down with ground strikes to get the stoppage.
Yuri Alcantara got the TKO over Iliarde Santos at 2:31 of round 1
Fabio Maldonado vs. Roger Hollett
In the Light Heavyweight opener, Hollett tried to push the action early with an overhand right. He cut off the cage and threw a powerful spinning back kick that landed low. Maldonado laid on the mat in pain but declined to see a doctor before the fight restarted. Hollettscored a takedown shortly after the restart but didn't do much with it. Back on the feet and Hollett controlled Maldonado against the cage until it was broken up by referee Leon Roberts. Another takedown by Hollett.
Maldonado started to find his rhythm in the second round. After a slow start Fabio caught Roger up against the fence and reeled off body shots. He wasn't taken down at all and had Hollett looking visibly worn. Maldonado got right back to it in round three. He got Hollett backed up into the fence and pummeled him with body shots and uppercuts in the clinch. Halfway through the round Hollett looked exhausted. Late in the round Maldonado scored a takedown of his own.
Fabio Maldonado took the Unanimous Decision (29-27, 29-28, 29-27) over Roger Hollett.
